Launched by Stanford students in 2012, delivery behemoth DoorDash now holds about 56% of the American online food delivery market. As a result, the company has unique insights into what Americans are ordering for food, as well as how their habits have changed.

In this visual, we rank DoorDash’s most-ordered takeout food in 2013 and 2023, per their “Decade Delivered” report.

French Fries: Born in Belgium, Loved by America

French fries are DoorDash’s most-ordered food in 2023 compared to the Panera chipotle chicken sandwich in 2013.

As it happens, French fries are also the most-ordered food on the platform of all time.

Since 2013, more than 600 million orders of fries have been delivered, and as the company notes, it is “a perfect food that (almost) no one’s making at home.”

Here’s their top 10 most-ordered takeout food items in 2013 and 2023

Interestingly, the Cobb salad is the only food item to stay within the top 10, though it has fallen five ranking spots in the last decade.

And while the chipotle chicken sandwich specifically is no longer on the top 10, spicy chicken sandwiches rank at sixth place in 2023.

When comparing overall trends over the decade, 2013 seemed to have more varied cuisine in the top 10: Asian, Indian, Middle Eastern, and French.

Meanwhile, 2023 is concentrated around American and Mexican food. DoorDash also states that the latter two are the most-ordered cuisines of the past decade. Almost universally, however, finger foods are

A rise in organized crime and the spread of illegal weapons are fueling violent deaths globally.

While there are varying trends across regions, the worldwide homicide rate reached 5.8 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2022. Overall, firearms were the leading cause of these deaths.

This graphic shows the world’s highest homicide rates by region, based on data from UNODC.

Countries With the Highest Homicide Rates

Here are the countries or territories with the highest homicide rate per 100,000 inhabitants in each region:

The highest homicide rates globally are found in the South America and Caribbean region, with the majority of homicides driven by crime-related activities.

Going further, the region is home to three of the world’s deadliest countries. With a murder rate of 53.3 per 100,000 people, Jamaica’s deadly violence is more than eight times as high as America. In recent years, a surge of illegal firearms have entered the country, with the majority of these weapons smuggled out of the U.S., particularly from Florida.

Following Jamaica are the island nations of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago. These two countries are known hubs for Venezuelan cocaine traffickers that transit illegal drugs to the U.S. and Europe.

Mexico ranks as the most dangerous country in North America, with more than 30,000

Birth rates are falling in the six most populated countries in the world, though at different speeds.

This graphic shows the annual births per 1,000 people in the world’s six largest countries by population. The data is from the UN World Population Prospects (2022) and has been compiled by Our World in Data.

The Global Decline in Fertility Rates

Fertility rates are declining in most places. According to the UN, in 1990, the average number of births per woman globally was 3.2. By 2019, this had fallen to 2.5 births per woman; by 2050, it is expected to decline further to 2.2 births.

Notably, a fertility level of 2.1 births per woman is necessary to avoid a national population decline over the long run (not including net immigration).

China’s birth rate has fallen the fastest in recent years among the countries highlighted here. The country registered 7.6 annual births per 1,000 people in 2021, compared to 24.4 in 1990 and 41.0 in 1950.

This trend suggests that China could face challenges similar to those faced by Japan, which has a vast senior population and significant economic and social implications.

The U.S. registered 11.1 annual births per 1,000 people in 2021, compared to 16.7 in 1990 and 22.8 in 1950. It’s worth noting, however, that the U.S. also adds people to its population through net immigration each year, unlike some other countries in the above dataset.

Nigeria, with the highest birth rate on our list, registered 37.1 annual births per 1,000 people in 2021, compared to 43.8 in 1990 and 45.6 in 1950.

A complex interplay of factors are leading to North America’s long wildfire season: increasing summer temperatures, erratic precipitation patterns, changing land use, and ironically, fire suppression practices.

But what does the data say? We visualize the millions of acres burned by U.S. wildfires from 1983 to May 2024, per statistics from the National Interagency Fire Center.

2010 and 2015 Saw Record Land Burned by Wildfires

From glancing at the chart, it’s apparent that U.S. wildfires are burning significantly more acres on average in the 2010s than they did in the 1980s. Interestingly, the World Economic Forum points out that while the number of fires itself has fallen since 2005, the land burned has increased, indicating wildfire intensity has grown.

While running into wild animals in a forest can seem like the worst situation for humans, there are plenty of other animals that are far deadlier than large predators.

We rank the top 10 deadliest animals by the number of people killed per year. Data for this visualization and article is sourced from BBC Science Focus.

Spreaders of Diseases are Deadliest for Humans

Mosquitoes, of course, are the reigning champions on the toll they take on humans. Every year they kill more than 700,000 people through a multitude of deadly diseases—dengue, yellow fever, and malaria.

By some estimates, mosquitoes are responsible for the deaths of half of all the humans that have ever lived.

Note: *Spreads diseases. **Homicides only.

Meanwhile, humans are (almost) their own worst enemies. Every year, nearly 400,000 homicides take place, making humans the second-deadliest animal for other human beings. And this doesn’t account for all the human-caused accidents that result in fatalities.

At fourth place, dogs may be our best friends, but as a carrier of the deadly rabies virus, they end up fourth on the list of top 10 deadliest animals.

Rounding out the top five are assassin bugs, which spread the parasite that causes Chagas disease, a condition that can go untreated for years and can result in serious complications that make it life-threatening.

Large mammals, including lions, hippos, and elephants round out the top 10. Interestingly, bears kill around one person a year on average and wouldn’t be anywhere close to making this list of the deadliest animals.

Wealth Survey: How U.S. Students Feel About Their Finances

Student debt in the U.S. has ballooned to over $1.7 trillion, burdening millions of Americans with financial stress. Rising tuition costs and stagnating wages are considered to be the major drivers of this issue.

To gain insight into how this is affecting students, we’ve visualized the results of WalletHub’s Student Money Survey.

This survey was conducted in 2024 with a nationally representative sample of 210 students. Results were normalized by gender and income.

Data and Key Findings

Student wealth surveys can provide unique insights into the financial preparedness of younger Americans.

Starting with post-grad fears, it appears that the majority of students are afraid of either not finding a job, or paying off their debt.

What is your biggest
post-grad fear?% of respondents 😔 Not finding a job39 💸 Student loan debt35 💳 Credit card debt13 🏠 Living with parents13

Some of these worries could subside in the future, as the federal government appears committed to cancelling federal student debt.

The latest news came on May 22, 2024, when the Education Department announced it would cancel $7.7 billion for borrowers who received Public Service Loan Forgiveness, which includes professions like teachers and nurses.

Regardless, 77% of students surveyed believed that their tuition was a good investment.

Not Learning Enough

Another highlight from this study was that nearly half (49%) of students feel that their school does not do enough to teach them about personal finance.

When survey respondents were asked to choose which topic they wished they had learned more about, the most common answer was “How to do my taxes”.

The United States is home to more than 46 million immigrants, constituting approximately 14% of its total population.

This graphic displays the top 25 countries of origin for U.S. immigrants, based on 2022 estimates. The data is sourced from the Migration Policy Institute (MPI), which analyzed information from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2022 American Community Survey.

In this context, “immigrants” refer to individuals residing in the United States who were not U.S. citizens at birth.

Mexico Emerges as a Leading Source of Immigration

Mexico stands out as the largest contributor to U.S. immigration due to its geographical proximity and historical ties.

Various economic factors, including wage disparities and employment opportunities, motivate many Mexicans to seek better prospects north of the border.

Mexicans are followed in this ranking by Indians, Chinese, and Filipinos, though most immigrants on this list come from countries in the Latin American and Caribbean region.

On the other hand, only three European countries are among the top sources of U.S. immigrants: the UK, Germany, and Ukraine.

Immigration continues to be a significant factor contributing to the overall growth of the U.S.

Forget the presidential race, the partisan divide in America can also be seen by how Democrats and Republicans feel about key government agencies.

We visualize the net favorability ratings of 16 federal government agencies, based on respondent party affiliation.

To find this data, Pew Research Center surveyed more than 10,000 adults, between March 13-19, 2023. View their methodology page for more details about the survey, the questions asked, and the results obtained.

ℹ️ Example calculation: This survey shows net favorability. As an example of how the score is calculated, 80% of the Democrats rated the CDC “favorable” and 15% rated it “unfavorable.” Therefore, CDC’s net favorability rating with Democrats is 65. Republicans Don’t Like How the CDC Handled the Pandemic

The division in net favorability is deepest for three federal government agencies. While the CDC garnered a net favorability rating of 65 from Democrats, more Republicans rated the agency unfavorably, leading to a net favorability rating of -32.

Similarly, with the EPA and the Department of Education, the difference in net favorability between the two voting sides is as high as 70–80 points.

Pew Research Center notes that Republicans didn’t always view the CDC quite so unfavorably, though a direct comparison is impossible.

Nevertheless, per the source, in March 2020, 84% of surveyed Republicans expressed positive views of the CDC’s performance. By October 2022, just 32% said the CDC had done an excellent or good job of handling the pandemic.

Visualizing Global Losses from Financial Scams

This was originally posted on our Voronoi app. Download the app for free on iOS or Android and discover incredible data-driven charts from a variety of trusted sources.

Last year, financial scams led to almost half a trillion dollars in losses worldwide, roughly equal to the GDP of Singapore.

As fintech has advanced globally, cyber-criminals have exploited various platforms in complex attacks. Often, they will steal customers’ account information on digital payment systems and online banking sites as a highly lucrative form of attack.

This graphic shows the scale of financial losses from scams and schemes, based on data from Nasdaq’s Global Financial Crime Report for 2024.

The Most Common Types of Financial Scams

In 2023, there were $485.6 billion lost in total from financial scams, and below we break down the specific scams that generated the biggest losses:

Type of Financial Scam/Scheme
Global Losses (USD) Payments Fraud$386.8B Credit Card Fraud$28.6B Check Fraud$26.6B Advance Fee Scams$19.1B Cyber-enabled Scams$10.0B Impersonation Scams$6.8B Employment Scams$3.9B Confidence Scams$3.8B Total$485.6B Payments Fraud the Top Financial Scam

Payments fraud makes up a staggering 80% of the total. This type of fraud occurs when payment methods are illegally manipulated to deceive or steal from a person or business.

One example of a key risk point for payments fraud are real-time payments. Here, fraudsters exploit payment systems through rerouting fund transfers. Along with this, cyber-criminals will use “banking trojans” as a primary weapon to hack account information. This type of attack lures users to click on a malicious PDF file, website, or app which steals information on a device.

Interestingly, a separate analysis showed that Brazil was the top country in the world for banking trojan scams, with 1.8 million attempted attacks over the course of June 2022 to July 2023.

Going further, business email compromise, a type of payments fraud, was the source of $6.7 billion in losses in 2023. These types of scams involve fraudsters masquerading as legitimate businesses to deceive unsuspecting customers into sending payments into fraudulent accounts.

Aircraft carriers are warships equipped with a full-length flight deck for carrying, deploying, and recovering aircraft. Since they allow naval forces to utilize air power without relying on local bases, they usually serve as the capital ships of a fleet.

In this graphic, we visualize the number of aircraft carriers in service by country as of May 2024.

This graphic only includes ships capable of carrying planes (excluding those designed solely for helicopters). The list is based on data from various sources.

U.S. Dominance

The U.S., with 11 aircraft carriers in total, owns 40% of the global fleet. Some of the American carriers can carry around 80 fighters. The country’s total combined deck space is over twice that of all other nations combined.

Along with France, the U.S. is the only nation with nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. These ships can remain at sea for as long as crew provisions last, without the need for refueling.

In 2024, China’s newest, largest, and most advanced aircraft carrier, the Fujian, started sea trials. With the addition of this ship, the country becomes second in our ranking.

Of 11 countries that have aircraft carriers in their fleets, six are NATO members.
